Collaborative start-up centres to unearth innovations in design and digital spheres

By / 7th of May, 2014

TWO new start-up innovation centres were officially opened in South Australia today in collaboration between Hills Limited, the State Government and the state’s major universities.

The Lance Hill Design Centre will emphasise user-centred design based start-ups and innovations with applications in health-care.

The Hills D-Shop will focus on commercialising digital innovations such as wearable ‘Internet of Things’ devices with applications in health, wellbeing, safety and security.

Hills and the South Australian Government jointly fund both projects in a $5 million agreement, with support from UniSA, Flinders University and the University of Adelaide.

Ted Pretty, Hills Limited Group Managing Director and CEO, announced that the first Hills ‘Pitch Day’ will take place tomorrow, with eight shortlisted submissions ready to present to commercial and academic experts.

“Importantly, we’re really looking for innovation in the areas that can make a real difference to people’s lives, like health care, aged and home care and safety and security,” Pretty said.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill, who opened the centres, praised Hills as a great South Australian success story, lauding the centres’ potential to discover new talent and innovation in the state.

“These centres will unearth and reward local design expertise and collaborate with key educational and research institutions and the rich pool of independent designers in Australia,”

The centres are estimated to create around 50 high-end jobs in the longer term, as well as being able to indirectly support up to 30 researchers.
