Thomas Foods International invest $30 million in Murray Bridge meat processing upgrade

AUSTRALIA’s largest family-owned meat processing company is making a large investment to upgrade the capacity of their Murray Bridge facilities in South Australia.

They have committed $30 million to the project, which includes a large shift towards environmentally sustainable processing.

Director of Operations at Thomas Foods International, David McKay, said that investing in sustainable best practices would secure their growth as an efficient exporter.

“The international demand for high quality Australian meat continues to strengthen,” he said.

The infrastructure projects, which include larger holding facilities for livestock, wastewater treatment facilities and sustainable energy programs, are expected to bring benefits to their business as well as the surrounding regional economy.

“We’re currently processing in excess of 120,000 lambs and sheep, and 5000 cattle per week across the group for our 80 export markets and we’d like to increase those numbers in the coming years,” he said.

  • Works underway at Thomas Foods’ Murray Bridge facilities include:
  • $5.5 million expansion of the lairage. This involves the construction of a new state-of-the-art stock holding facility to efficiently receive livestock trucks and store lambs.
  • $10 million wastewater storage treatment facility including two covered lagoons considered the latest technology in biogas production, producing up to 8000 cubic metres of biogas daily which offsets natural gas use.
  • $10 million sustainable energy program. Two 10 megawatt dual fuel boilers have been commissioned to considerably reduce CO2 emissions and generate clean energy for the plant’s production.
  • $5 million upgrade of beef facility. This includes capital works and automation systems to boost capacity, generate efficiency, improve worker conditions and promote hygiene best practice.
